The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana (PM Vishwakarma) is a central sector scheme launched on 17 September 2023 โ€” Vishwakarma Jayanti โ€” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Managed by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, the scheme is designed to provide end-to-end support to traditional artisans and craftspeople working across 18 family-based trades in India’s unorganised sector.

The scheme offers a comprehensive package that includes formal recognition through a PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID Card, free skill training with a daily stipend of โ‚น500, a โ‚น15,000 toolkit grant for purchasing modern tools, and a collateral-free business loan of up to โ‚น3 lakh at just 5% interest per annum โ€” with the government covering the remaining 8% as interest subvention. As of February 2026, over 2.72 crore applications have been received under this scheme, making it one of the most widely adopted artisan welfare programmes in India’s history. The scheme runs until 31 March 2028 with a total budget of โ‚น13,000 crore.

How to Apply โ€” Step-by-Step Process

Registration under PM Vishwakarma Yojana cannot be completed directly from home. Aadhaar-based biometric authentication through a CSC machine is mandatory. The process involves four official stages after the initial CSC visit.

  1. Visit nearest CSC Centre (Jan Seva Kendra) with Aadhaar card, linked mobile number, bank account details and ration card. The CSC operator initiates registration on the PM Vishwakarma portal.
  2. Aadhaar e-KYC and biometric verification โ€” your Aadhaar number is verified via OTP and fingerprint biometric at the CSC machine. This is a mandatory step and cannot be skipped.
  3. Artisan Registration Form โ€” the CSC operator fills in your trade category, personal details, family information and bank account details on the portal. Select your trade carefully from the 18 listed options.
  4. Udyam Assist Platform registration โ€” simultaneously, the CSC operator registers you as an MSME entrepreneur on the Udyam Assist Platform, giving you formal business identity in the government ecosystem.
  5. Gram Panchayat or ULB verification โ€” your application is reviewed at the local Gram Panchayat (rural) or Urban Local Body (urban) level to verify trade authenticity and family eligibility.
  6. District Implementation Committee approval โ€” after GP clearance, the DIC reviews and recommends your application to the Screening Committee for final approval.
  7. Receive PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID Card โ€” once approved, download your digital certificate and ID card from the PM Vishwakarma portal using your registered mobile number.
  8. Attend skill training and receive toolkit grant โ€” attend basic training (5โ€“7 days) at a designated centre. The โ‚น15,000 toolkit E-Voucher is disbursed via DBT after skill verification. Then attend advanced training (15+ days) if applicable.
  9. Apply for Tranche 1 loan โ€” after completing basic training, apply for the first loan tranche of โ‚น1,00,000 through your bank. Repayment tenure is 18 months at 5% interest.
  10. Apply for Tranche 2 loan โ€” after successfully repaying Tranche 1, apply for the second loan of โ‚น2,00,000 with a 30-month repayment tenure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for PM Vishwakarma Yojana from home online?

No. While the official portal pmvishwakarma.gov.in exists, registration requires Aadhaar-based biometric authentication which can only be completed at a Common Service Centre (CSC). You must visit your nearest CSC or Jan Seva Kendra in person with all documents. The CSC operator completes the portal registration on your behalf.

Do I receive the โ‚น15,000 toolkit grant as cash in my bank account?

No. The โ‚น15,000 toolkit grant is provided as an E-Voucher after skill verification, disbursed via the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This voucher is redeemable at government-approved vendors for purchasing modern tools relevant to your trade. It cannot be used for general purchases or cash withdrawal.

I already took a Mudra loan. Can I still apply for PM Vishwakarma?

No. Applicants who have availed loans under PMEGP, PM SVANidhi, or Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana in the last 5 years are not eligible for the PM Vishwakarma scheme. This condition is verified during the District Implementation Committee screening stage. If your Mudra loan was taken more than 5 years ago, you may be eligible โ€” consult your CSC operator for confirmation.

What is the digital transaction incentive under this scheme?

Registered PM Vishwakarma beneficiaries receive โ‚น1 cashback for every digital transaction โ€” UPI payments, QR code scans, or mobile wallet transfers โ€” made through their business account. This incentive is capped at 100 transactions per month, providing up to โ‚น100 per month as an additional income for adopting digital payments in their trade.

What is the benefit of being registered on the Udyam Assist Platform?

Registration on the Udyam Assist Platform gives artisans formal MSME status as recognised entrepreneurs. This opens access to additional government benefits available to MSME-registered businesses โ€” including priority credit from banks, government procurement preference, state-level MSME subsidies, and participation in government trade fairs and market linkage programmes.

What happens after the scheme ends in March 2028?

Artisans who have already registered and received their PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID Card retain their formal recognition permanently. Loan repayments continue as per the agreed tenure even after March 2028. The government may choose to extend or revise the scheme after reviewing its impact โ€” however, no official announcement regarding post-2028 continuation has been made as of May 2026.
